A Tribute to Armanti Edwards

On Sunday December 13 the day after ASU's close loss to the University of Montana and the day of Armanti Edward's graduation from ASU, the Helena Montana Independent Record published a tribute to Edwards titled OFF THE BENCH: Edwards can hold his head high, even in defeat. . .

"MISSOULA — The 24,207 Montana and Appalachian State fans that packed Washington-Grizzly Stadium on Saturday not only witnessed one of the great games in Division I FCS history, they also witnessed the end of an era.

"That era belongs to Armanti Edwards.

"The Appalachian State quarterback, 2008 Walter Payton Award winner and 2009 nominee, will graduate today, just three and a half years after he stepped onto the college campus in Boone, N.C. Thought to be a skinny kid that was too small for the FBS, he has electrified Appy State fans with his incredible ability to throw, run and make the impossible seem possible.

"Starting since he was a freshman, Edwards drove the Mountaineers to national titles in 2006 and 2007, delivered the crushing blow to the then-ranked No. 5 Michigan Wolverines, and accomplished all of that in just his first two years with the program.

"On Saturday, the NFL prospect added one more unofficial record to his belt: the most dominant football player UM has faced since Randy Moss in 1996.

"Edwards torched the Grizzlies for 353 yards passing and 54 yards rushing, a total of 409 of the team’s 497 yards in the FCS semifinal game, which UM ended up taking away 24-17."
