Week 2: ASU 48 Lenoir-Rhyne 7
|
The warm blue-sky afternoon was perfect for the record crowd at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The extensive pre-game show featured video highlights of the historic win at the University of Michigan the previous week. The stadium, the campus and the town of Boone were filled with pride for the accomplishments of this now nationally-famous team. This was the first meeting of the two teams since 1982. Lenoir-Rhyne coach, Fred Goldsmith, is the 18th head coach of the school. He was hired in November, 2006 after a successful 47-14 record at Franklin High School in Franklin, North Carolina. In the 1990s, Goldsmith coached at Duke University and Rice University. In 1992, he was the Sports Illustrated National Football Coach of the Year. |
Kidd Brewer stadium opened in September 1962 and is nicknamed "The Rock". It is the home of not only the Appalachian State University Football team but also the Field Hockey and Track & Field teams. The stadium was originally called Conrad Stadium. It was renamed in 1988 in honor of the successful ASU head football coach, Kidd Brewer. Brewer was a successful athlete at Duke. His 1937 football team at Appalachian State was unbeaten and unscored upon. The stadium is the highest collegiate football stadium east of the Mississippi River and was the first in the Carolinas to install artificial turf (1970). The facility is currently in the midst of a renovation. |

Many fans prepared for last Saturday's game against Lenoir-Rhyne by purchasing and wearing the latest t-shirts displaying the ASU - Michigan final score. Some t-shirts referred to some viewers' lack of knowledge about the location of Appalachian State, some referred to the reported $400,000 paid to ASU to play Michigan and all celebrated the unprecedented success of ASU's football program.
