Update: September 4, 2007

"The final fallout from a disastrous opening weekend for Michigan came Tuesday, when the Wolverines dropped all the way out of The Associated Press Top 25, an unprecedented fall from No. 5 to unranked."

"If you are a fan of the Michigan football team - and there are apparently quite a few of you out there - then a new curse word has just entered your vocabulary : Appalachian ( I will make sure later that you know how it's pronounced.) . . ."
~ New York Times Editorial September 3, 2007 by Stephen J. Dubner, co-author of the New York Times best seller Freakonomics and graduate of Appalachian State University (see link in attached article)

Many ASU students, faculty, staff and alumni and local citizens of Boone North Carolina will long remember where they were when they saw or heard that ASU beat #5 ranked Michigan in Ann Arbor. They knew instantly how big the game's outcome was to its players, the school and the local Boone North Carolina economy. Big. Very Big.

ASU supporters already had much to be proud of. Back-to-back Division 1-AA Championships had already added much to the reputation of the players, coaches, Appalachian State University and Boone North Carolina.

The 2007 season started with the question, "Can they win the National Championship a third time?" That is still the question but the season has now taken on a much richer meaning for all.

Who would have guessed that the team would end up on the cover of Sports Illustrated after having played a game labeled the "Alltime Upset." In addition, the team has a 15-game winning streak - the longest in the nation.

Local Appalachian State t-shirt vendors had lines out of their doors after the game. The local WalMart had very little ASU athletic wear by mid-week. All are expecting deliveries of t-shirts including new designs commemorating the win by Saturday's first home game.

"..the Athletic Director Charlie Cobb said the local WalMart would sell as much as $1 million worth of Appalachian State merchandise this year. And the college has found some new clients as well. Cobb said Ohio retailers are looking to stock Appalachian State apparel now. It seems Ohio State fans are suddenly very fond of the Mountaineers." ~ "NYTimes.com" "A Football Goliath Faced a Proud, Talented David" September 2, 2007

"BOONE, N.C. Sept. 4 (AP) - Coach Jerry Moore tried his best to follow the normal routine Tuesday for Appalachian State's first padded practice since its upset of then-No. 5 Michigan.

But this workout was unlike any other in school history.

Television cameras lined the field, a satellite truck was parked at one end of the stadium and four sports information employees stood with phones for players to do interviews after practice

Oh, and there was only one goalpost. The other was still being fixed after being torn down by students Saturday and left on the chancellor's lawn."

Even famed Freakonomics co-author and Appalachian State alumni Stephen Dubner, not a big college football fan in general, confessed that he was rifling through his closet to look for the ASU school tie that Chancellor Ken Peacock gave him last year after Dubner spoke at Commencement exercises.
