"Behind an undersized quarterback with toothpick legs, a former walk-on turned dominant running back and an improving defense, Appalachian State became the first school to win three straight Football Championship Subdivision titles with a 49-21 win over Delaware."

Jerry Moore and the Mountaineers showed that true champions are not made by winning a single game but by a sustained effort to do what it takes to win time after time.

With 3 1/2 minutes left, ASU fans left their seats and lined the sidelines of the field. When asked how he felt about that, Delaware coach K.C. Keeler responded:

"They should be excited about their third national championship. It is what it is. You can't blame the fans for getting excited about that."

On the Monday after the championship victory, the Appalachian State campus was quiet. A light snow had fallen the day before and most students had left the campus for the semester break.

But the book store was open for faculty, staff and remaining students and there were t-shirts, sweatshirts and other items commemorating the victory. "Back-to-back-to-back", "Three-peat" and "Dynasty" were some of the victory slogans.

There is a deep sense of pride in the coach and players of this now famous team. The ASU community and Alumni and the Boone North Carolina area residents know first-hand what these formerly little-known athletes have accomplished in the last 3 years and the excitement that it brought to this mountain community.

Four-peat? Well, maybe. From Coach Moore:

"I can't tell you how much relief there is in being a three-peat. It is over."
